To photograph people is to violate them, by seeing them as they never see themselves, by having knowledge of them that they can never have; it turns people into objects that can be symbolically possessed. Just as a camera is a sublimation of the gun, to photograph someone is a subliminal murder - a soft murder, appropriate to a sad, frightened time
摄影不只是作品,摄影是一整套事件,里面有权力的运作,有视角的选择,有对新事物的疯狂也有对旧日幻影的迷恋。也正因为摄影是现实中的事件,摄影作品也才能成为现实中的超现实。桑塔格的洞察力和感受力太过强大
桑塔格在对比“工业社会”与“非工业社会”的时候,不免有些东方主义吧。同样的简化也存在于她对中国的讨论中。很明显,她是通过一种既定的过滤系统来看非西方世界的。很好奇这本1977年出版的书于海德格尔1977年发表的World Picture的文章之间的关系。个人认为本书中的观点不是很新。基本没有离开巴赞1960年那篇the ontology of photographic image的影子。萨义德的东方主义1978年出版,时间差是桑塔格唯一的脱罪证明。

9 - Need a revisit
很聪明,无论是观点还是文风。特别是现在用手机就能拍照的时代,每个人都在建自己的艺术画廊,桑塔格的观点还是很有启发性。印象深的观点是:摄影是谋杀的升华;照片不促成理解,因为没有时间上的纵深;“摄影是艺术,因为它能撒谎”;摄影是否是艺术是无用之争,它只是媒介;“to experience a thing as beautiful means to experience it necessarily wrongly. — Nietzsche”。
从工业化革命,社会变革引出了照片/摄影的目的和使用场景,延伸到人类观察环境的角度,还深入讨论了摄影伦理道德层面,挺值得看的。
