本书的优点是高屋建瓴的视野，旨在反思、批判、解构19世纪以来艺术史学科的先验预设和底层逻辑，或者说“元叙事”：不再是大写的艺术史，而是艺术史的艺术（art of art history）、艺术史的历史（history of art history）、艺术史的艺术的历史（history of art history's art）。第三章讨论艺术史学的视觉体制（档案与摄影、博物馆与全景敞视监狱、艺术史的话语空间与透视法的装置构造），最合我胃口。本书可以当英美“新艺术史”理论指南来使用，但不太适合入门，有些地方写得的确不太易读。当然了，再“新”的话语，重复得多了，也难免会生厌——更何况，对30年后的读者来说，这类话语早就不再“新”了。
