肖邦生前出版了两部长篇小说，其中一部是备受赞誉、烙上女性主义印记的《觉醒》（1899）。我并不喜欢这本小说，也是，不曾承担家庭婚姻责任重负甚至缺乏生活想象的年轻男女怎么会想读、怎么会能读懂Kate Chopin呢！但不得不低头，想要了解Kate Chopin还得是读这本。读第二遍我还是不喜欢，但没有第一次那么百无聊赖。我最喜欢的一篇评论来自布鲁姆，尽管没有全看懂为何布鲁姆将肖邦比作惠特曼式的女弟子。但我的阅读感受与他相似，本书立场和女性主义无关，埃德娜死于自恋，死于self-assertion，死于自我的极乐再生，她内心深处最为“警觉、强悍、残忍的”部分显然是她对自己的激情，而她在混沌中平静地（诸事抛之脑后let them go）走向死亡。
让人成长的不是具体的事情，而是具体的爱和具体的不爱。
