为了一篇约稿，一天读完了所有关键章节。强调军事推动的社会政治整合（因此第一部分基本是一套军事社会史），不同区域希腊与地方传统的融合不可用「希腊化」和「东方化」简单二元对立（因此第二部分分地区讨论了这种复杂性），着重多种闪族语言史料呈现的非希腊罗马本位的声音。在1993年出版时毫无疑问是伟大的，方法论和对未来研究的指导性极强（几乎每处他提到「可以做，但是我能力不足做不了」的问题，后来都有了很好的研究），但任何结论都不可尽信。犹太和叙利亚的部分至今仍然有很多为现在学者赞同的意见，Arabia的部分不用读。作者反复强调「该时期近东地区的社会经济史是写不出来的」，将近三十年后的今天，我还是赞同这句话的。
