In the "brilliant novel" ( The New York Times ) V.S. Naipaul takes us deeply into the life of one man—an Indian who, uprooted by the bloody tides of Third World history, has come to live in an isolated town at the bend of a great river in a newly independent African nation. Naipaul gives us the most convincing and disturbing vision yet of what happens in a place caught between the dangerously alluring modern world and its own tenacious past and traditions.

A poor life in such a political-economic structure
"After all, we make our ourselves according to the ideas we have of our possibilities. I would have hidden in my hole and been crippled by sentimentality, doing what I was doing, and doing it well, but always looking for the wailing wall. And I would never have seen the world as the rich place that it is."
The great writer weaved the strong and powerful emotions into the ordinary words rather than shout it out. Salim's both uncertain love and hate twisted together present the society and life during that tempestuous changing time. Homeland drifted like the water hyacinth in the river.
