Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America is a book written by Barbara Ehrenreich. Written from her perspective as an undercover journalist, it sets out to investigate the impact of the 1996 welfare reform act on the working poor in the United States.

The events related in the book took place between spring 1998 and summer 2000. The book was first published in 2001 by Metropolitan Books. An earlier version appeared as an article in the January 1999 issue of Harper's magazine. Ehrenreich later wrote a companion book, Bait and Switch (published September 2005), which discusses her attempt to find a white-collar job.

Barbara Ehrenreich is an American writer and political activist who describes herself as "a myth buster by trade", and has been called "a veteran muckraker" by The New Yorker.During the 1980s and early 1990s she was a prominent figure in the Democratic Socialists of America. SOCL102课无聊的Textbook, 太过于浅显易懂而且没有深入思考了,好吧最后的Evaluation部分还可以,但这种体验生活的Field Trip方式对我而言实在是既没有社会学调查的严谨,也没有理论思想的深刻,只能是作家的无聊小随笔? Chris
First Year Seminar要求读的。很有启发。美国梦到头来也只是梦而已。
写得太condescending。虽然很大程度上可以理解,以作者的背景,所看所感肯定不是从普通working poor的角度。如果是我去体验,估计想法看法也是一样的。但可以写得更好一点。有些时候感觉她要表达的是好的意思,但听起来却有相反的undertone。
这么好的题材怎么看得我昏昏欲睡……不太喜欢这个行文风格
有时候就碰上这样突发奇想的人,也真没办法。实在够狠。
Witty, if not always trenchant
感觉看懂了7到8成。
资本来到这个世界上,每个毛孔豆滴着血和肮脏的东西。最后一章分析美国不平等问题分析得还挺透彻。如果放到现在2022年,还有一个原因可能是信息差。很佩服作者能为了journalism去亲身体验
选题是好选题,但全书带给人的阅读体验却非常一般。作者遣词造句不平实易懂,尽管能用简单的语句表达相同的意思,但作者却总喜欢总喜欢附庸风雅,结果反而不好,读起来不流畅,总有一种拧巴的感觉。全书的内容定性为研究报告和学术著作还勉强,当成纪实文学就有点差强人意了,因为可读性确实较差。
