前現代中國的色情媒體流通限於男性菁英的社交圈，合法/非法的慾望界定與政治權力掛鉤。明清的木版印刷帶來革命，挑戰了the ideology of yin，清末的攝影促成情慾民主化。近代早期到現代中國也有連續性：知識份子繼續劃定好和不好的情慾，國家試圖控管色情媒體，性科學論述混合了房中術的語彙。四平八穩又總覺得少了什麼，對porn studies的回顧很潦草、一個觀點總是翻來覆去地說，強調的跨國部分篇幅極少，最後也沒說明白中國的案例到底怎麼介入了porn studies
中国史该领域具有开创性的著作。时段跨度大，内容包罗万象，对于围绕色情的权力关系、等级制度的刻画尤为深刻。结尾表达了作者的当代关怀，和对pornography是否能带来解放和进步的个人观点。只是一本300页的书，要撑起如此庞大的框架显得颇为吃力，提出的许多问题值得日后继续研究。

To the all missing masturbators 观点很简单，内容论述有些啰啰嗦嗦。其实这么看来，第三代以后的汉学研究其实基本都遵从一个路子，从一个不起眼或让人忽视的历史现象，如本书的色情出版物，又或者天津的卫生改革，从这样的史实开始，进一步讨论现代国家的形成和弥散性权力的实践（曼）。本书少了49年之后的事情，大大减弱了福柯的理论与观点。
清末民国时期“淫秽”的观念变迁与物质文化，商品化与印刷科技进步促使色情图像媒介和海外性学著作在社会中下层间大量流通，但传统媒介如民间小调和《金瓶梅》等言情小说仍旧颇受欢迎。与此同时，传统文人精英团体对“性”的垄断和解释权遭到大大削弱，知识分子如张竞生、叶德辉等试图引导大众接受特定性观念，但在引发社会大讨论后，社会大众化又反噬了他们的文化权威。史料搜集分析能力不错，但整体结构过于零散，过分被主题拘束，每章都从不同角度探讨同一史料，文风又有些晦涩，生造的词汇如“implied masturbator”不得要领，阅读体验不佳。
